MVP Signal Review: A Super Understable Driver

Updated on:

I hope this MVP Signal review finds you well and excited to learn more about this gem. Now, if you’re in the mood to explore a versatile, flexible, and remarkably understable disc, then congrats, you’re in the right spot!

I’ve been throwing discs at chains for over 13 years now. During this time, I’ve had the pleasure to toss, twist, and test nearly every disc on the market, unraveling its unique characteristics, and this is one of the few that truly stands out.

Coursing its way through the air like a penned verse, navigating obstacles, and closing distances easily adds a compelling line to your disc golf story. Ready to dive into its nuanced flight? Let’s go!

Flying With Detail And Control

  • Speed: 6
  • Glide: 5
  • Turn: -3
  • Fade: 1

With a speed rating 6, the Signal sits comfortably in the slower end of the fairway drivers category, perfect for detailed and shorter distance shots. Its moderate Glide rating of 5 means it can stay aloft admirably during flight, even with less power.

It has a -3 turn rating, which means the disc has a clear predisposition for turning right (seen from a right-handed, backhand thrower’s perspective), particularly at higher velocities, making it a wonderful choice for anhyzer shots or tight corners.

But what about the Fade? You’re looking at a rating of 1 here, showing this disc to be pretty straight-flying towards the end of its flight – only a minimal hyzer angle will kick in as it loses momentum.

It is stellar when navigating complex, crowded courses or executing curvy throws with control. Admittedly, it can be challenging to handle in strong wind situations due to its high turn and lower velocity, but its unique flight characteristics truly shine in the right, calm conditions.

Dimensions

  • Diameter: 21.10 cm
  • Height: 1.50 cm
  • Rim Depth: 1.20 cm
  • Rim Width: 1.20 cm

At a diameter of 21.10 cm, the Signal fits into the standard size bracket for fairway drivers, easy to grip and maneuver for most.

Its height, which measures 1.50 cm, is on the lower side, contributing to a sleek, streamlined profile that can slice through the air with minimal resistance. This aerodynamic advantage might be just what you need to perfect those finesse shots that require a deft touch.

The rim depth and rim width are where it truly differentiates itself. Both measure a slight 1.20 cm. The shallow rim allows for a comfortable grip, especially for my smaller-handed friends, who found it a perfect fit.

One of my favorite moments with this disc came during a long approach on a par 4. The shallow rim provided excellent control and the meshing of the small rim with the disc’s low swiftness allowed for terrific precision.

A Fairway Driver For All Skill Levels

The Signal is an amazingly versatile fairway driver, expertly straddling a fine line, making it a useful tool for both novices and experienced disc golfers. This is largely due to its understable flight profile, making it incredibly easy for newer people who might not yet have developed high-power throws.

I found it to be a perfect stepping stone when I was improving my skills. Its performance adjusts beautifully to your advancing arm skills and is a great step up from an understable midrange.

It starts as a straight flyer, but as you get stronger, it changes into a versatile disc that you can use to perform shots requiring understability. On many occasions, it has been my go-to when executing a tricky anhyzer fade to navigate a tree or slide right toward the basket.

On the other hand, experienced throwers will find a reliable “utility player” in it. Its extreme understability makes it a handy tool for hyzer-flips, rollers, or neat manipulation of flight.

Yet, it’s important to remember that it may not hold up well in high wind conditions or if you’re looking for a fade finish shot due to its understability and low fade rating. Therefore, be prepared to supplement your bag with others for such scenarios.

Primary Use

Orange MVP Signal Fairway Driver with Black Rims and Black Stamp

The Signal’s standout feature is its understability, which grants it a fantastic ranged capacity. Primarily, this fairway driver shines for shaping fairway shots or executing precision turnover shots.

While it serves excellently as a general-purpose item, its real value comes into play when you’ve got to flex your shot-shaping muscles.

Straight Shot

Owing to its understability and moderate velocity, it flies like an arrow if you’re not overpowering it. I’ve found it invaluable when threading the needle through a tight array of obstacles, as it holds the line with minimal deviation.

Anhyzer Shot

Pitched flat, it naturally turns to the right (for a right-handed backhand throw), making it ideal for executing anhyzer shots. Personally, there have been many times while navigating around a stubborn tree or a tricky bend when this has come to my rescue.

Roller Shot

Its high turn and low pace make it a reliable roller-shot choice. When tossed with some anhyzer angle and some velocity, it lays down and continues rolling, great for long, clear fairways or getting out of tight spots.

Whether starting out or honing your skills, this product offers a reliable means to dial in your control and practice shaping different types of shots with precision and finesse. Its versatility makes it not just a disc for throws but also for thinkers.

What Similar Discs Are Available?

Thought Space Mantra

The Thought Space Athletics Mantra is another understable fairway driver with just slightly more speed. And excellent disc with a similar flight pattern!

Kastaplast Falk

The Kastaplast Falk is another flippy driver that is easy to throw for any skill level.

Axiom Crave

Another 6.5 speed disc, the Axiom Crave is a slightly more stable version of the signal. If you want to learn shot shaping then give this driver a throw!

My overall advice would echo what other seasoned players have advised me: try out various options, enjoy the variety of our sport, and find out what works best for you through actual play.

MVP Signal Review: Final Thoughts

The Signal is versatile and offers beginners and experienced disc golfers a great resource to step up their game. As a beginner, this will help you to understand mechanics and, with time, to master shot shaping with an understable.

More advanced players can apply it creatively, from executing precise turnovers to creating hyzer-flips and rollers.

Pros:

  • Great for beginners and developing players due to its understability and low speed.
  • Versatile for different shot types, including straight, anhyzer, and roller shots.
  • Excellent for controlling lines and manipulating flight paths.
  • Has a comfortable grip thanks to a shallow rim.

Cons:

  • It might be challenging to handle strong wind conditions.
  • Not ideal for strategies requiring a hyzer finish due to low fade.
